Fort Aguada is easily one of the most popular destinations of Goa. It is the perfect testimony for the glory of Portuguese legacy. It was constructed by Portuguese in 1612. The magnificent fort has been standing high with all its elegance for over four hundred years. The Aguada Lighthouse is also another feature that makes this spot popular among tourists. Reis Magos Fort
The fort was constructed as an outpost for Adil Shah of Bijapur in 1493. When the Portuguese conquered Bardez, they renovated the fort and built the fort along with the church. It was also laterly used as a jail. By 1993, it was abandoned as it was starting to deteriorate, the restoration process started in 2008. This Portuguese styled fort facing the capital city of Panjim is surrounded by sturdy laterite walls that are studded with the typically Portuguese turret. It was formally the accommodation of resident viceroys, other dignitaries and visitors from Europe.
Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa
The Basilica of Bom Jesus (or 'Basílica do Bom Jesus' in Portuguese) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier in a glass coffin. St Francis is teh patron saint of Goa. The church is located in Old Goa, which was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese rule. ‘Bom Jesus’ means literally, ‘Good or Holy Jesus’
Se Cathedral, Old Goa
The architecture of the Se Cathedral is Portuguese, Manueline style. The exterior is Tuscan, whereas the interior is Corinthian. The church is 250 feet (76 m) in length and 181 feet (55 m) in breadth. The frontispiece stands 115 feet (35 m) high. The Se Cathedral’s tower houses a large bell known as the “Golden Bell” on account of its rich tone. It is said to be the largest in Goa, as well as one of the best in the world.
Ruins of the Church of St.Augustine, Old Goa
The church was constructed in 1602 by Augustinian friars who had arrived in Old Goa in 1587. It was abandoned in 1835 due to the expulsion of religious orders from Goa and the Portuguese government ordered its demolition. All that is left of the Church of St Augustine today is the 46m-high tower, which served as a belfry and formed part of the church’s facade.
Mount Mary Church, Old Goa
Located barely 3 km from the Capital, this beach welcomes you with swaying Pine trees and is also the resting place of the first Chief Minister of Goa, who so loved this place
Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim
High above the Idalco Palace built by Adil Shah is the glorious Panjim Church. It has been rewarding all the tourist that go there with a spectacular view of Panjim City. Located in the heart of Panjim City, it the first church of Goa and a favourite among the travellers who come to Panjim. The quare of flowers in front of the church was built in 1855 and is a beautiful feature of this splendid Portuguese church. The hilltop above the church is called 'Bairro Altos de Pilotos'. It gets its name from the large beacons that used to be lit here, to guide ships into the estuary before the lighthouse was built.
Chapora Fort has been popular with visitors to Goa for a long time as it is one of the most beautiful sunsets and evening spots to chill in the whole of Goa. This awe-inspiring fort has a surreal beauty and was featured in the famous Bollywood movie 'Dil Chahta Hai'. This has made it very famous.
